Wilford J. Arbour
With 55 years in the beauty industry, he was born in Toronto, became a U.S. citizen at 19, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
After working as a dairy milkman in Detroit, harsh winters prompted him to seek a new career. A chance conversation at a soda fountain led him to beauty school, which he joined in 1959 for $275.
Despite a challenging first client, he persevered and opened his first salon in 1962. He expanded to multiple salons and beauty schools by 1973.
Mr. Arbour later acquired the New Midwest Beauty College and Brighton Institute of Cosmetology, merging them in 1998 under his leadership.
